Engineering Assurance for Titanium-Based Defence Systems
Client
Confidential – Defence Sector (United Kingdom)
Project Overview
Carbon Arc was engaged to support the development of a next-generation howitzer system constructed from Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) — a high-performance alloy selected for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and suitability for extreme operational environments.
Our Role
Carbon Arc developed and implemented a comprehensive Control Procedure to ensure full compliance and engineering integrity throughout the manufacturing lifecycle. The procedure detailed:
Engineering design validation
Welding Procedure Qualification (WPQR) specific to Ti Grade 5
Production welding controls
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) protocols
Quality assurance and documentation
Pressure testing in accordance with the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED), supported by PD 5500
Execution & Oversight
Following procedure approval, Carbon Arc provided on-site technical assurance during the initial production run. Our responsibilities included:
Witnessing and verifying start-up processes
Conducting audits in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 3834, and bespoke client specifications
Ensuring full traceability and compliance across all manufacturing stages
Outcome
The project delivered a robust, auditable framework that ensured the howitzer system met both regulatory and operational requirements. Carbon Arc’s involvement provided confidence in the integrity of the manufacturing process and established a repeatable model for future production runs involving advanced materials and critical defence systems.
